Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards 2016 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd

Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards 2016 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd

Smaragd is the designation indicating the highest quality of Austria's most popular crisp, food-friendly white wine varietal and, with his Southern Oregon Gruner, winemaker Stephen Reustle follows Austria's winemaking process required for that designation. This wine offers lovely aromas that suggest spiced-yellow apple and pear, a touch of floral apple blossom and a dash of fresh sweet green herbs to keep it interesting. On the palate, it's structured beautifully with bright citrus flavors of lime and grapefruit with notes of melon rind, followed by a surprising flinty minerality before revealing refreshing hints of saline and white pepper on a dry, lingering finish. This is a versatile food wine and it's balanced and complex enough to savor on its own. - Reviewed by Gary Hayes
